Antonio Conquers Hollywood
The film 'Man-Talk' has been critically acclaimed in Hollywood's inner movie circles. It stars Antonio, Ricardo and Whoozit the toy. Ricardo and Antonio's performances have received great praise. Antonio may well get a 'Cannes' nomination for the last scene in the movie. His 'ahh' is said to be worthy of a Laurence Olivier. There have been some press accusations that Whoozit's consumption of drugs has escalated. We think these are unfounded and will look down on however calls Whoozit 'a toy on acid'.

The fate of cat
Cat has taken this baby thing in his stride. 'It's like adding another channel to my tv' he told Mafalda. Now he has so much to keep an eye on: the squirrels, Mafalda, Ricardo, Grandma Gracinha and baby. Plus there is more furniture under which he can hide.

Promenade
This is Antonio first leisurely promenade outside - trips to the Doctors and the emergency room excluded.
Bull-fighting
Grandma Gracinha is shown here writing down how much Antonio had for dinner. His parents are a little controlling and always want to know just how much he eats. Antonio fancies himself a bit of a bull-fighter and in the absence of bulls he has been working his granny Gracinha by never taking as much milk has she wants him to. Below grannie had just had a bear of a fight with the child. Needless to say the 'toreador' had won...
Alice in Antonio-land
Alice and Antonio talk. They have established that if they find each other single in 18 years they might run to Vegas and get hitched. Alice was especially smitten by Antonio's preppy collar. She thought his choice of clothes is flawless.
Let's Get Physical
Antonio displays here the same intense will to exercise his mother has always had, by sleeping away while laying on his gym. Thank you Abbie, Neal, Bryce, Monica nd Jens for the fabulous stripy rug!
Rain-trip
Cousin Rita and Harry visited on the day all the water fell down from heaven. It was an effortless trip for them. It only took then 10 hours to drive back from Princeton to Baltimore. Well, we were happy to see them! Maybe they will visit again during a dry season...
Nudism
Here Antonio is shown walking out of his changing station in the nude. Antonio is quite sure he will never quite forgive his mother for displaying this picture, but - really - what are parents for?
Spoilage
Antonio, shown here under the blanket Grandma Reis knit for him, appreciated home instantly. We estimate it took him exactly 48 hours to realize he could boss around both his parents and his grandma Gracinha. He is working on the cat.
Home-Filippa
Already at home, daddy serves dinner. He has been given the honorary title of 'home-Filippa'. The kid chows down a charm whenever daddy shows up with a bottle.
Here are his last moments in the NICU...
Nurse Filippa prepares Antonio for the ride home. We love nurse Filippa. She was our favorite day nurse in the NICU. She sang 'You are my sunshine' to Antonio and held him and played with him and talked to him and turned his mobile on... and she was the best feeder in the NICU - ever! In her own words she could feed a rock... we believe her.

How exactly did this miracle happen?
After 93 days in the hospital (remember Antonio was born on the 10th of January at 29 weeks of gestation) and a possible sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, anemia of prematurity (9 blood transfusions over 3 months), stalled growth, another suspected sepsis, hypothyroidism, necrotizing enterocolitis, another possible sepsis, a second possible necrotizing enterocolitis, direct hyperbilirubinemia, broncho-pulmonary dysplasia, apnea of prematurity and an inguinal hernia resolved by surgery... (breathe, breathe) Antonio was discharged on the 13th of April. That is, aproximately 13 days after his original due date.
Thank God, the NICU staff, the patience of his parents and the prayers of friends and family.
While in the NICU he was followed by his mother daily and his father every other day. He was visited by Saje Mathieu, Alice Goffman (soooo many times), Sasha Todorov, Katrina McLoughlin and Brian, Uncle Jojo, Magali Fassiotto, Mervin John, Rina Fujii, Isabel Neto and friends, Lena Carrilho and family, Grandma and Grandpa Reis, Christy Romer and Grandma Gracinha who came from Portugal on the day before his discharge (good timing!).

Child Services
(Antonio) "I have no idea why they keep hitting my back. One of these days I will have to call child services myself. Where is that Elaine person anyway?" (Elaine is the NICU social worker)
Too tired
(Mafalda) "Good Lord, can we please be doing this at home soon? If it is not to much to ask? Because I could really take a nap now. Seriously, I really could..."
Grandparents Reis
Grandparents Reis came to visit over Easter. Grandma Reis got mesmerized by Antonio's eyes - she could not let go, it was too difficult! Grandpa Reis said that Antonio was the best looking baby he had ever seen - EVER!... When asked if there might be a slight exageration in that statement he said this was no exageration whatsoever. It is a perfectly unbiased statement, according to him.
Focusing...
It was hard for the camera to focus, but after a while it pulled itself together and did it:

Antonio is a big boy now and he is getting so cute that even the camera melts when it looks at him...
Annie-fun
...but not as much as Annie and mommy (Annie shown below bathing Antonio). Once upon a time Annie was born at 29 weeks just like Antonio, so they have a special thing going on.
A proper bath!
On the 24th of March mommy and Annie (Antonio's favorite night nurse) conspired to introduce Antonio to water. Not the cat baths he had been taking since he was born, no, no - this time it was a proper bath! After some initial surprise (what are these women up to now?) Antonio enjoyed his bath very much indeed...
De-motion
Antonio is getting so big now! (2600 grams) Mommy is so happy that she cannot stop buying him new clothes and daddy does not even mind!

On the 22nd of March Antonio was de-moted. He is no longer NICU material he is just SCN (Special Care Nursery). He is very old news and very big and doing well, and his parents do not mind that a bit!

The Bottle
But just a week later the lunch came back!... and a week later the Doctors decided to introduce Antonio to an important partner: The Bottle! After Antonio and The Bottle said their hellos, Antonio told us The Botlle was a demanding partner and their conversations got him really tired. But he likes The Bottle so much that he even dreams about it with his mouth open and his tongue wagging up and down.
NEC-Scare
On Monday the 5th of March Antonio had another set back. He woke up with a distended belly and had a number of apnea episodes. The nurses and the doctors were not taking any chances so they stopped his feedings and gave him antibiotics for 5 days (just in case that awful NEC business was back again). Thank God it was just a scare!... but Antonio was left wondering where his free lunch had gone...
Quality Time
In a desperate attempt to offset the nefarious effects of bows, daddy spends some quality time with Antonio. (Ricardo shown below holding son and very afraid the baby will disintegrate, break apart, decel (decelerate: heart beat drop), desat (desaturate: oxygen level drop), talk back, or even stand up and run for the door, you never know with these baby people...)
Girls and Clothes
It is very unfortunate but this is what happens when girls are in charge of clothing - people end up with bows on their heads. On the bright side, it looks like the C-PAP days are over! Antonio has graduated to a canula and has no plans to go back. (canula shown between bow and pacifier)

Cat-bathing
He likes doing Kangoroo care (snuggling up to mommy's chest like a baby Kangoroo), hates when people try to measure his temperature and he is a calm baby. Mommy makes a point of bathing Antonio every day. He has not quite yet warmed up to the merits of cleanliness, but he is playing along for now.
Fattening up
Recently he has been concentrating on growing fat because he heard it runs in the family. He would not like to disappoint that way. He sleeps a lot and occasionally opens his left eye to check out who is speaking. If it is mommy or daddy he might be persuaded to open his other eye, but only if they are saying something interesting, which is hardly ever the case. People say his forehead, eyes, ears and limbs look just like daddy. His nose, mouth and coloring are mommy's. Uncle Jojo was very happy to see that he has two arms and two legs just like his uncle, he thought the resemblance is just stricking, that's genes for you!

The Godfather - Part I
In early February uncle Jojo came to visit and paint the basement. He told Antonio: "Tony Frankie, I want to make you an offer you can't refuse". Then he went on and on about family and taking care of business in New Jersey and how he wanted to be a Godfather, it was all very shady. Then he left and the basement is still not painted...
Hairy Men
That look is really old, he will not repeat it. He was also told it is fashionable for men to be hairy, so he decided to sport a blond carpet on his back. When he grows older he hopes to be like Tony Ramos (that brasilian actor dude that had a hairy chest and back and was paid fortunes for his soap opera performances). He has got the name and the back hair to start with...
Tanning Salon
...but he made up for it in cuteness. Right after he was born he overheard someone saying tanning beds are all the rage so he decided to try it out in his own private suite. At that point he had not quite read the dressing code memo, so he was caught wearing what is best described as a 'ski-beach' look
Handy-man
When he was born, Antonio cried immediately. He was red, skinny and very small. Look how small he was (next to daddy's hand) two weeks after he was born...
Some more on Antonio's story so far
On the 10th of January Antonio was born in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at 5:45 pm by Cesarean Section. He weighed 1025 kg and measured 35 cm.
He was named Antonio for Saint Anthony of Padua (or Lisbon, if you happen to be Portuguese) and Francisco for Saint Francis of Assisi (Saint Anthony was a Franciscan also). Mommy was not taking chances after those rocky last months of pregnancy and Daddy did not have better options. His great-grandmother (who died in December) loved the name and that sealed the deal. Saint Anthony and Saint Francis were bright men who had an earthy approach to spirituality.

Antonio was born on the 10th of January of 2007 after 29 weeks of gestation. He has been quite the fighter inside and outside mommy's belly. He has been on and off the infamous C-PAP (shown left hanging from his nostrils). Lately he has bravely fought a serious intestinal infection (NEC) and is now back on track on his feedings. He is expected to come home around his due date (27th of March) but he might want to surprise us. It's his call.
